Physicians

Mary Michael Schweiker, MD, FAAP

Dr. Schweiker was born in San Angelo, Texas and has lived many places, including Rome, Italy. Her family eventually ended up in Lynchburg, Virginia. She received a bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from Duke University and a medical degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine (MCV), where she also completed her pediatrics internship and residency. She is board-certified in pediatrics. While working at Monument Avenue Pediatrics as a pediatric resident, she decided she enjoyed working in a smaller practice where she could get to know her patients and their families well. She joined the practice full-time in 1997. Her special interests include asthma, breastfeeding and adolescents. She has been recognized in Richmond Magazine’s Top Docs for Kids and Top Docs issues, West Ends Best magazine and Chesterfield Living magazine: Conquering Childhood Cancer, Meet Connor’s Heroes. She is a recipient of the Elizabeth Harbison Award for Pediatrics; the Emily Gardner Pediatric Resident Award, and the Rookie of the Year Attending Teaching Award. Dr. Schweiker and her husband have three children and stay busy with school PTAs, their children’s sports and activities, and activities at Reville United Methodist Church. Like many working moms, her biggest challenge is balancing a busy medical practice with a busy family. But when she has free time, she enjoys traveling, scrapbooking and working out.

Grace R. Soltys, MD

Dr. Soltys was born in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia and spent part of her childhood in Berlin, West Germany. After graduating from Berlin High School, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a medical degree from The University of Virginia. She completed a pediatrics internship and residency at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine (MCV). She is board-certified in pediatrics. Dr. Soltys joined Monument Avenue Pediatrics in 1999 and enjoys seeing patients in a small practice. Her husband is an infectious disease physician and she has a special interest in that area. Dr. Soltys and her husband have two sons and one daughter. In her spare time, she enjoys going to the beach, cooking, gardening and traveling with her family.

Mary-Margaret S. Kim, MD

Dr. Kim was born and raised in Woodstock, Virginia. She received a bachelor of science degree in Biology from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, graduating summa cum laude and with honors. Other undergraduate honors include membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society. She received a medical degree from The University of Virginia where she was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Society. She completed her internship and residency at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She is board-certified in pediatrics. Dr. Kim joined Monument Avenue Pediatrics in August of 2008 after deciding to settle down in the Richmond area. She feels that MAP has it all, great staff, convenient location and a commitment to providing patients with the highest standard of healthcare. Dr. Kim’s special interests include preventing childhood and adolescent obesity through counseling on healthy lifestyle choices, dermatology and infectious diseases. She has given a presentation at the Pediatric Academic Societies meeting in Toronto, Canada called What Motivates School-Aged Girls to Exercise? She also presents Baby Basics, a lecture for expectant parents through Henrico Doctors Hospital (available in the “for expectant parents” section of this website). She and her husband Dr. Joseph Kim, a spine surgeon at West End Orthopaedics, are avid college football fans and attend as many football games as possible every fall. She also enjoys running the occasional 10K or half marathon, mountain biking, hiking, camping at national parks, gardening and creating gourmet meals.

B. Wayne Thorpe, MD

A native of Richmond, Dr. Thorpe received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and history from Baylor University, a medical degree from The University of Virginia and a master of public health degree from The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He completed two years of pediatric residency at Duke Medical Center and one year of pediatric residency at Baylor College of Medicine. His academic studies have also included theological studies at Princeton Theological Seminary and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has been board-certified in pediatrics since 1987. Dr. Thorpe has practiced pediatrics all over the world, including Thailand, Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia. Since joining Monument Avenue Pediatrics in 1995, he has regularly performed short-term volunteer service assignments in countries such as China, Honduras, Guatemala, Romania and Maldova. He and his wife have one son.

Nurses

Bonnie Burns, LPN

A lifelong Richmonder, Bonnie has been with Monument Avenue Pediatrics since 2003 and enjoys the respect her coworkers show each other. She and her husband have five children, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She enjoys shopping, going to the beach and Atlantic City. And best of all, Bonnie is a cancer survivor!

Evelyn King Burroughs, RN

Evelyn joined Monument Avenue Pediatrics in 2000 and loves her coworkers and her patients. She and her husband have three children (all redheads!). In her spare time, she enjoys acoustic guitar, singing, aerobics and jogging.

Beth Fairservice RN, BS

Beth was born and raised in Richmond. She received a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing. Beth has been with Monument Avenue Pediatrics since 2003 and enjoys her coworkers, patients and their parents. She and her husband have two children and one grandchild. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, especially to the Catskill Mountains, sewing and spending time with her grandchild.

Barbara Greene, CMA, EMTB, NRCPT

Barbara lives in her childhood hometown, Louisa. She has worked in pediatrics since 1981 and is the recipient of a citizenship award. She joined Monument Avenue Pediatrics in June 2007, after looking for a small practice where she could get to know her patients. Barbara volunteers with a local rescue squad. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with Miss Daisy, her cat, gardening, going to the beach and volunteering in a bible education network.

Kathleen Harik, LPN

As a child, Kathleen was a patient at Monument Avenue Pediatrics! She joined the practice in 2006 and appreciates the kindness and compassion the staff shows their patients. She and her husband have two dogs and a rabbit. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the piano, listening to music and spending time with family.

Susan Hall Shaw, CMA, EMTE, Nurse Coordinator

Susan has worked in pediatrics since 1993. A native Richmonder, she joined Monument Avenue Pediatrics in 2003 and enjoys working with the doctors in a supportive team atmosphere. She especially enjoys helping new moms adjust. Susan and her husband have three children, one grandchild, and Kiki, a teacup Chihuahua. She likes daffodils, visiting Dogwood Dell, Toby Keith and Richard Gere movies.

Office Staff

Brenda Harper, Business Office

A native Richmonder, Brenda has been with Monument Avenue Pediatrics since 1980, when her children were patients. Brenda is an avid baseball fan and also enjoys bird watching, church, choir, fishing and reading. Brenda and her husband have two daughters, two sons and seven grandchildren.

Grace Barnes, Business Office

A native Richmonder, Grace recently rejoined the staff after working at the practice in the 1970s and 1980s. She is an avid Dallas Cowboys fan! Grace volunteers at Memorial Regional Medical Center and serves as Treasurer of the hospital’s Auxiliary. She is very active in her church. Grace and her husband have two sons and look forward to the upcoming arrival of their first grandchild. She enjoys reading, scrapbooking and collecting snowmen.

Dana Nikolaisen, Certified Medical Assistant

Dana joined Monument Avenue Pediatrics in 2010 and appreciates working with a staff of team players. A native of Petersburg and Chesterfield, she enjoys cooking, visiting the mountains and the beach, NASCAR racing, and spending time with her husband and children.
